SAVE THOSE BMW BLOCKS

Since we are the topic of BMW engines, let’s look at saving the M52TU, M54 and M56 aluminum 6 cylinders.

The problem is the customer cooks the motor. You know when they say, “I pulled over as soon as I saw light”.  Right, 10 miles later.  Or you get that “it only overheated a little”.

So the thermostat for an example fails, thus causing a serious overheating condition, and “pops” the head gasket or worse, cracks the cylinder head.

As you are reinstalling the cylinder head, and the threads for the head bolts pull out of the block. First of all, you should have read the BMW bulletin that states to angle torque the cylinder head bolts on disassembly to verify integrity of the engine block cylinder head bolt threads!

But wait there is still hope. Thanks to the Baum Tools BMW drill jig plate and the solid carbon steel inserts that thread in to the block...that engine gets  new life!

I was introduced to  these solid carbon steel inserts made by "Timesert" in 1979 while working on a Porsche 911 that needed the case studs holes repaired. I have not used a Heli-Coil since.

Timeserts also come in an oversize that let you fix the holes that were “fixed” with Heli-Coils and pulled out.

Use the "Timeserts" with Baum Tools # B115000 drill plate and you are in the block saving business. Developed with our BMW Master techs at various shops, this plate has been saving BMW block for over 5 years.

Not only saving blocks in numerous independent shops, but also used in many BMW dealerships and being evaluated at BMWNA.

So to save that ‘99 325i from the bone yard you save the block, and you will keep that customer coming back, as you’ll be the hero that saved them BIG bucks!
